This can be a useful way of finding out if there are others researching in a similar area to your own, giving you the chance to get in touch with them and expand your academic network.
The team at IALS rely on current research students getting in touch with them, so if you'd like the details of your research added, then please contact them via https://ials.sas.ac.uk/clrt-current-legal-research-topics-database. Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678906037012713035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-256557340712083208.post-19170116590640183672020-03-18T10:59:00.003+00:002020-03-18T10:59:31.211+00:00IALS Library - online resources available to members during the closure of the library buildingIf you are a member of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies library, then you will be able to access their collection of eBooks whilst they are closed.
The aim is to provide a guide for each collection within Hein, and each one will feature information on collection content, search tips, training materials and more. The link through to all guides can be found at: https://libguides.heinonline.org/?b=g&d=a<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For many Birkbeck users of Hein, the Law Journal Library will be the resource that they are most familiar with, and this already has its own guide at: https://libguides.heinonline.org/law-journal-library
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">These are worth a look both for new and more experienced users.

Recently added is an online tutorial on Judicial decisions in international law. This aims to provide an introduction to the background of the international courts (e.g. ICJ, ICC, ECHR) and the subsidiary role of judicial decisions in international law, as well as giving pointers on where to find decisions from a number of courts and how to access cases which are still in progress.

Worth a look if you're new to this area of law, or would like a refresher on where to find relevant case law. Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678906037012713035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-256557340712083208.post-15964646130047826872019-05-16T16:54:00.000+01:002019-05-16T16:57:05.647+01:00New look for Westlaw UK<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Westlaw UK has relaunched with a new look and feel. Although quite different to the 'old' Westlaw at first glance, information within it is structured in a similar way. The new version has some interesting additional features, with users able to annotate documents and highlight sections of text, with this information being retained for future use.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For now both the existing and new Westlaw platforms are available to staff and students, with the new platform becoming the default option at the end of the summer term.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">To access the new version, please use the link from within the A-Z list on our Databases page.
The recently launched United Nations iLibrary is the place to go to search for content produced by the UN Secretariat and its agencies, funds, programmes and institutes.

The UN has produced, and continues to produce a large amount of research and data, but navigating to what's needed has not always been straightforward. The introduction of the iLibrary is a big step forward in terms of making content easier to find.

From the home screen it is possible to either carry out a search or browse for content - by theme, country or item type. As well as the basic search, there is an Advanced Search option which gives users the ability to specify the type of document, subject area, date range and language they wish to search across, and I would recommend trying out this option. Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678906037012713035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-256557340712083208.post-17998930414795729202019-04-04T17:15:00.000+01:002019-04-04T17:16:25.962+01:00EU content via LexisLibrary <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As a result of the changes to International Content, the way in which EU Material on Lexis can be accessed has changed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The different EU options are shown. If you haven't yet needed to use this part of Lexis then next time you go to use it, you'll see that it looks rather different!
To access material from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and the United States, select the Sources link from the home page of Lexis Library. There is now a section of draft statutory instruments (SIs) that relate to the leaving of the EU. This can be found under the Browse section of the legislation content screen:

There are quite a lot of them:

There is also a section headed 'Retained EU Legislation' which has selected EU documents appearing in a new format, and aims to preserve a snapshot of current EU legislation. Documents display as currently in force, with amendments pending (the exclamation mark).

The Equality and Human Rights
Commission (EHRC) maintains a research database. Four times a year, in March,
June, September and December, newsletters are emailed to database members.
These provide information about our most recent research and inquiry reports
across the protected characteristics and human rights. Our most recent
newsletter, for example, included descriptions of new research reports on the
Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), measuring ethnicity and disability pay gaps
and access to justice. It also included information about new EHRC corporate
documents and guidance and policy briefings. Each newsletter lists our ongoing
research projects and provides details of all our research publications since
the establishment of the EHRC in 2007. It also includes a new or revised
reading list (or occasionally more than one reading list) on a particular issue
or protected characteristic; recent topics have included equal pay and pay
gaps, flexible working, housing, the PSED, sex discrimination, sexual
orientation and welfare reform.

UNAFEI is based in Tokyo, and includes an interesting Publications section (available on the English version of its web site). Within this section is the Resource Material Series, an ongoing series of congresses and seminars, each on a different subject. Most recently these have covered:

Juvenile justice & the UN standards and norms

Effective measures for the treatment, rehabilitation & social integration of juvenile offenders

Children as victims and witnesses

Multi-agency cooperation in community based treatment of offenders

Staff training for correctional leadership

and The state of cybercrime: current issues and countermeasures.

Within each theme there are 'Visiting Expert's Papers', which are usually (but not exclusively) by academics from Europe, the United States and Australia and 'Participants' Papers' which give an insight from a wider variety of countries into the topic under discussion. For example Children as victims and witnesses has contributions from Egypt, Malaysia and the Maldives, and Cybercrime from Kenya, the Philippines and Thailand. Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678906037012713035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-256557340712083208.post-6539068991183483992018-06-05T11:01:00.001+01:002018-06-05T11:02:20.424+01:00Advanced Introductions to Law - new ebooks<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Titles within the Advanced Introductions series by Elgar Publishing aim to provide an overview of a particular subject, introducing the essential principles and providing insights which encourage readers to think critically.
